Golf In Alabama

All Kinds of Golf Opportunities Await

When it comes to planning a vacation, Alabama isn't usually at the top of the list. Golfers however may have a slightly different point of view. After all, the state is home to several high quality golf courses managed by Honours Golf as well as The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the Holy Grail of golf to many a golfer in the US. I recently had the opportunity to travel to Alabama and visit some of their top golf courses. Being from Florida, I'm used to flat terrain, and lots of palm trees, sand and water. What I found in Alabama was a pleasant surprise.

My journey started off near the water, in Gulf Shores, AL. I played a couple of different tracks managed by Honours Golf: Cotton Creek at Craft Farms and The Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club as well as the highly touted Kiva Dunes.

Craft Farms is a 36-hole facility. Both courses - Cypress Bend and Cotton Creek - were designed by the King, Arnold Palmer, who built the course to challenge golfers rather than intimidate them. I found that Cotton Creek provided a fitting challenge from the white tees. One of the most memorable holes was the par 5, 7th, a 453-yard risk/reward hole from the white tees, that winds around a lake. Hit a good tee shot down the right side and you'll have a decision to make. There's not much room for error if you decide to go for it in two, so choose wisely. Cotton Creek was both fun and challenging.

Kiva Dunes is a challenge regardless of the tees you choose. The greens were redone just a few months ago, so they don't hold approach shots as well as they should - or will. This Jerry Pate masterpiece has won all sorts of ccolades and is considered one of the state's best tracks. I have not so fond memories of Number 17, a 175-yard par 3 over water to an elevated green where the left side of the green can be measured with a yardstick above the right side. It requires pinpoint accuracy to land the ball on the same level as the hole with a left pin placement. Kiva Dunes will make you work for every good number you write on your scorecard. They offer vacation rentals as well as great golf and with several other great golf courses in the area, why not plan a mancation?

RTJ Golf Trail Celebrates 25 Years
Grand National GC- Part of The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

RTJ Golf Trail Celebrates 25 Years

By Brooke Peace Harris, Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National (RTJ) is celebrating 25 years. Since 1992, RTJ has seen a lot of pars, birdies, sunshine and few eagles too! Nearly 12 million rounds have been played on this beautiful course. Last year alone, brought in roughly 500,000 players. That's an incredible number for the Auburn-Opelika area.

RTJ spans 600 scenic acres. 32 of the 54 holes wrap along Lake Saugahatchee. It has been featured in Golf Digest's list of "America's Top 50 Affordable Courses" and was also listed among the nation's 40 Super Value courses by Golf Digest's Places to Play".

People from all 50 states & 20 international countries play the trail including the pros! Grand National is the host of the PGA TOUR's Barbasol Championship in July.

"The scenery is amazing. All of the courses are really beautiful. It fits any level of player. You can play the courses from over 7,700 yards or from under 6,000 yards. They're just really cool golf courses on really cool pieces of land..." said Patton Kizzier, PGA Tour member and Montgomery native.

If you haven't played Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Grand National yet, we suggest you give them a call. Book a room at the Marriot at Grand National, schedule a tee time at RTJ, enjoy a cocktail at the clubhouse and stay out of the bunkers.
